What is Mixlr?

Mixlr makes broadcasting high-quality live audio easy.

Mixlr makes it easy to broadcast live to the web, Facebook, and mobile devices. Just download our free broadcasting app, and broadcast live instantly. Mixlr is perfect for podcasters, bands, live acts, DJs, conference organisers, journalists and many more besides.

Help! I'm stuck... help me broadcast live!

We've designed Mixlr to be as easy to use as possible. For many, the easiest way to start is just to plug in a microphone (or use the internal mic if your computer has one). You can also get an audio signal from any normal audio input, like your decks, mixer or guitar. If you need help, check out our broadcasting guide.

I'm having problems updating my broadcasting app. What can I do?

Check out our easy guide to updating your Mixlr app.

Mixlr is not recognising my soundcard. What can I do?

Mixlr is designed to work with Core Audio (Mac), MME drivers (Windows XP) and WASAPI drivers (Windows Vista and Windows 7).

Generally, Mixlr should work with any audio interface. However, sometimes compatibility issues do arise.

If you still can't get your device to work, please contact us and let us know: we'll do our best to work out what's happening.

My listeners tell me their are gaps/silent periods in my live broadcasts. What's going on?

This is usually caused by insufficient bandwidth at either the broadcaster or the listener's end.

If only one or two of your listeners are experiencing the gaps, then they may not have enough bandwidth to listen to the live stream without it occasionally buffering.

If many of your listeners report gaps which seem to happen at the same time, then the problem is likely to be insufficient bandwidth at the live broadcaster's end. Sometimes this is caused by a slow internet connection (it's the upload speed, not the download speed, which is important), but can also be caused by network problems, or other applications, especially file-sharing or torrent applications, hogging your bandwidth.

If you experience this, then please make sure that you have closed other applications which consume upload bandwidth before you start broadcasting. We usually find this helps. If you still have problems, we can decrease the amount of bandwidth your broadcasts use at our end, and advise in other ways. Get in touch and we'll be happy to help.

What platforms is Mixlr available for?

Mixlr's live broadcasting application is currently available for Microsoft Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7, and Mac OSX 10.5 and above.

We're considering whether to bring Mixlr to Linux-based platforms: if you want to see it, you can vote for it on our feedback forum.

How do I use Mixlr with Traktor S4 on Mac OSX? When I select the S4 device in Traktor, SoundFlower becomes unavailable.

The key is to set up an aggregate device which contains both the S4 device, and SoundFlower. You can then select this device in Traktor, and set up your output routing using a combination of S4 and SoundFlower channels. We'll be putting together a full tutorial on this in the future. You'll also find our general SoundFlower tutorial helpful.

I'm using the "iTunes / system sounds" setting, there's a signal showing but I can't hear any sound. What should I do?

This is because you had your Mac's volume muted, or turned low, before selecting iTunes / system sounds.

The easiest way to fix it is to: select "Built-in input", turn up your Mac's volume in the usual way, and then re-select "iTunes / system sounds".

What are those 'Post to Facebook/Twitter' links under the comment box?

If you're signed in, and you've added connections to your Facebook or Twitter account in your profile section then Mixlr will optionally post your comments on live broadcasts to either of these services. It's a fun way to get your friends and followers joining in to the same live event that you're enjoying.
